The Supremacy of Christ

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross.

Not Saved

"The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved."—Jeremiah 8:20.

NOT saved! Dear reader, is this your sorry condition? Warned of the judgment to come, invited to escape for your life, and yet at this moment not saved! You know the way of salvation, you read it in the Bible, you hear it from the pulpit, it is explained to you by friends, and yet you neglect it, and therefore you are not saved. You will be without excuse when the Lord shall execute judgment. The Holy Spirit has blessed the Word which has been preached in your hearing, and times of refreshing have come from the divine presence, and yet you are without Christ. All these hopeful seasons have come and gone—your summer and your harvest have past—and yet you are not saved. Years have followed one another into eternity, and your last year will soon be here: youth has gone, manhood is going, and yet you are not saved. Let me ask you—will you ever be saved? Is there any likelihood of it?

Already the most favorable seasons have left you unsaved;
Will other occasions alter your condition?
Means have failed with you—the best of means, used perseveringly and with the utmost affection—
What more can be done for you?
Affliction and prosperity have alike failed to impress you; tears and prayers and sermons have been wasted on your barren heart.
Are not the probabilities dead against your ever being saved?
Is it not more than likely that you will abide as you are till death for ever bars the door of hope?
Do you recoil from this idea?

Yet it is a most reasonable one: he who is not washed in so many waters will in all probability go filthy to his end. The convenient time never has come, why should it ever come? It is logical to fear that it never will arrive, and that Felix like, you will find no convenient season till you are in hell. O bethink you of what that hell is, and of the dread probability that you will soon be cast into it!

Reader, suppose you should die unsaved, your doom no words can picture. Write out your
dreadful predicament in tears and blood, talk of it with groans and gnashing of teeth: you will be punished with everlasting destruction from the glory of the Lord, and from the glory of His power. Allow my voice to startle you into serious thought. O be wise, be wise in time, and before another year begins, believe in Jesus, who is able to save to the uttermost. Consecrate these last hours to lonely thought, and if deep repentance be bred in you, it will be well; and if it lead to a humble faith in Jesus, it will be best of all. O see to it that this year pass not away, and you an unforgiven spirit. Let not the new year's midnight peals sound upon a joyless spirit! Now, NOW, NOW believe, and live.

"ESCAPE FOR THY LIFE;
LOOK NOT BEHIND THEE,
NEITHER STAY THOU
IN ALL THE PLAIN;
ESCAPE TO THE MOUNTAIN,
LEST THOU BE CONSUMED."

Bitterness in the Latter End

"Knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end?"—2 Samuel 2:26.

If you are merely a professor, and not a possessor of the faith that is in Christ Jesus, the following lines are a true depiction of your end. You are a respectable attendant at a place of worship; you go because others go, not because your heart is right with God. This is your beginning. I will suppose that for the next twenty or thirty years you will be spared to go on as you do now, professing religion by an outward attendance upon the means of grace, but having no heart in the matter. Tread softly, for I must show you the deathbed of such a one as yourself. Let us gaze upon him gently. A clammy sweat is on his brow, and he wakes up crying,

"O God, it is hard to die. Did you send for my minister?"
"Yes, he is coming." The minister comes.
"Sir, I fear that I am dying!"
"Have you any hope?"
"I can't say that I have. I fear to stand before God; Oh! Pray for me."

The prayer is offered for him with sincere earnestness, and the way of salvation is for the ten-thousandth time put before him, but before he has grasped the rope, I see him sink. I may put my finger upon those cold eyelids, for they will never see anything here again. But where is the man, and where are the man's true eyes? It is written, "In hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torment." Ah! why did he not lift up his eyes before? Because he was so accustomed to hear the gospel that his soul slept under it. Alas! if you should lift up your eyes there, how bitter will be your wailings. Let the Saviour's own words reveal the woe: "Father Abraham, send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame." There is a frightful meaning in those words. May you never have to spell it out by the red light of Jehovah's wrath!

Merry Christmas!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Spot of His Children

Deuteronomy 32:5

What is the secret spot which infallibly betokens the child of God? It were vain presumption to decide this upon our own judgment; but God's word reveals it to us, and we may tread surely where we have revelation to be our guide. Now, we are told concerning our Lord, "to as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to as many as believed on His name." Then, if I have received Christ Jesus into my heart, I am a child of God. That reception is described in the same verse as believing on the name of Jesus Christ. If, then, I believe on Jesus Christ's name—that is, simply from my heart trust myself with the crucified, but now exalted, Redeemer, I am a member of the family of the Most High. Whatever else I may not have, if I have this, I have the privilege to become a child of God. Our Lord Jesus puts it in another shape. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." Here is the matter in a nutshell. Christ appears as a shepherd to His own sheep, not to others. As soon as He appears, His own sheep perceive Him—they trust Him, they are prepared to follow Him; He knows them, and they know Him—there is a mutual knowledge—there is a constant connection between them. Thus the one mark, the sure mark, the infallible mark of regeneration and adoption is a hearty faith in the appointed Redeemer. Reader, are you in doubt, are you uncertain whether you bear the secret mark of God's children? Then let not an hour pass over your head till you have said, "Search me, O God, and know my heart." Trifle not here, I adjure you! If you must trifle anywhere, let it be about some secondary matter: your health, if you will, or the title deeds of your estate; but about your soul, your never-dying soul and its eternal destinies, I beseech you to be in earnest. Make sure work for eternity.

[C.H. Spurgeon - Morning and Evening, Evening, Dec.22]

I Will Strengthen Thee

Isaiah 41:10

GOD has a strong reserve with which to discharge this engagement; for He is able to do all things. Believer, till thou canst drain dry the ocean of omnipotence, till thou canst break into pieces the towering mountains of almighty strength, thou never needest to fear. Think not that the strength of man shall ever be able to overcome the power of God. Whilst the earth's huge pillars stand, thou hast enough reason to abide firm in thy faith. The same God who directs the earth in its orbit, who feeds the burning furnace of the sun, and trims the lamps of heaven, has promised to supply thee with daily strength. While He is able to uphold the universe, dream not that He will prove unable to fulfil His own promises. Remember what He did in the days of old, in the former generations. Remember how He spake and it was done; how He commanded, and it stood fast. Shall He that created the world grow weary? He hangeth the world upon nothing; shall He who doth this be unable to support His children? Shall He be unfaithful to His word for want of power? Who is it that restrains the tempest? Doth not He ride upon the wings of the wind, and make the clouds His chariots, and hold the ocean in the hollow of His hand? How can He fail thee? When He has put such a faithful promise as this on record, wilt thou for a moment indulge the thought that He has outpromised Himself, and gone beyond His power to fulfil? Ah, no! Thou canst doubt no longer.
O thou who art my God and my strength, I can believe that this promise shall be fulfilled, for the boundless reservoir of Thy grace can never be exhausted, and the overflowing storehouse of Thy strength can never be emptied by Thy friends or rifled by Thine enemies.

"Now let the feeble all be strong,
And make Jehovah's arm their song."

Watering Down God's Wrath Dilutes God's Love.

In an effort to make the Gospel more seeker-friendly, some Christians avoid talking about God's wrath, anger, and hatred toward those who have sinned against him. By watering down the wrath of God such people cheapen and diminish the love of God.

Such a faith void of God's wrath was characterized in the early 1900s by a movement called Protestant Liberalism. In 1937, H. Richard Niebuhr, professor at Yale Divinity School, gave this description of Protestant Liberalism's theology: "A God without wrath brought men without sin into a kingdom without judgment through a Christ without a cross."

As Niebuhr pungently demonstrated, eliminating God's wrath minimizes the cross, which is the ultimate manifestation of God's love (see Romans 5:6-8).

Because God is holy, perfect, and sinless, he deserves all glory, honor, fame, praise, and exaltation. However, when we sin—and every one of us sins—we insult God's holiness. Sin is fundamentally an offense against God, and so he hates sin and punishes all who sin against him (see Psalm 78:19-21, John 3:36, Psalm 5:5, Isaiah 13:11, Psalm 7:11).

The Apostle Paul, in Romans 1:18-19, describes the ubiquity of God's wrath: "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of human beings who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them" (see also Romans 1:18-31).

So, if we all are godless and wicked, deserving of God's wrath, how can he accept us? Does God say, "Well, at least you're making progress"? Does he grade on the curve: "You're better than average, so I guess I'll give you a passing grade"? No. God can't forgive like that because his holiness and justice demand that perfect satisfaction for sin be made.

Instead, what God does is this: He sends his son, Jesus Christ, to bear all our sins so that our sin is paid for by Christ. What an amazing act that the very one who you hated, scorned, reviled, and scoffed at is the same one who took upon himself the death penalty you deserved, and because all your sins are placed on him God declares you righteous. That's good news!

The Desire for God's Name and Renown

Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws,
we wait for you;
your name and renown
are the desire of our hearts.

My soul yearns for you in the night;
in the morning my spirit longs for you.
When your judgments come upon the earth,
the people of the world learn righteousness.

Isaiah 26:8-9

Only God Can Make It Happen

Frustrated? It may be because you're trying to make something happen that only God can make happen.

Whenever you are doing what God has called you to do, it is important to rely on His strength, His grace, and His power to complete your task. You will become frustrated if you try to make things happen on your own strength instead of relying on God. God is the author and finisher of His plans (Hebrews 12:2), and you must not try to take the place of God if you expect things to work out.

In Colossians 1:26-27, Paul reveals a mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations... Christ in you, the hope of glory. In other words, there is something that people of the past didn't know—it was hidden from them, a mystery to them—but Paul is now revealing that mystery to us: Christ lives in all who believe in Him! No longer is God just with his people—God now lives in his people!

Also, note that it is Christ in you that's the hope of glory—not Christ and you.

Paul then continues by saying that he labors and works for the gospel, but all of his labor is really done by Christ's power, which so powerfully works in [him] (Colossians 1:29).

If you're trying to labor without Christ's power at work within you, then your labor will be frustrating and in vain. You need to stop trying, and start dying to self so that you may be alive to Christ's power.

Struggle and frustration occur when you try to do God's job by your own strength—rather than relying on Christ's strength, which is at work in you.

An Ignorant, Profane, Soul-flattering Clergy

A Puritan Audio Devotional by Thomas Brooks

Quotes about the Bible (Part 6)

"Whatever view of the Bible you take, if you are to be in any way obedient to the Bible you cannot make the Bible itself the centre or focus of your attention. It points away from itself. From the Christian point of view, the centre of attention can never be merely the Bible; it must always be Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus the Messiah, Jesus the Lord of the World."
Tom Wright
Bishop of Durham and Vice-President of The Bible Society

"God's Word, which is all about Jesus Christ, can do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. We are sinful and unable to remedy our condition, but from God comes the incredible, limitless power that can transform our lives."

ACLU

Recently, I read an article about the American Civil Liberties Union a.k.a. ACLU regarding its disregard for the moral fabric woven by America's forefathers. It's obviously not an ACLU publication, written with a Christian slant, so I decided to check out ACLU's website and see for myself. I found their position on freedom of expression on this page: http://www.aclu.org/freespeech/gen/11178pub19970102.html

You may read it yourself but if you don't have the time, I've highlighted a few things that may be telling (my commentary found in parentheses)...
  • Finally, in 1969, in Brandenberg v. Ohio, the Supreme Court struck down the conviction of a Ku Klux Klan member, and established a new standard: Speech can be suppressed only if it is intended, and likely to produce, "imminent lawless action." (is it possible that this may be too late?) Otherwise, even speech that advocates violence is protected. The Brandenberg standard prevails today.
  • The ACLU has often been at the center of controversy for defending the free speech rights of groups that spew hate, such as the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazis. But if only popular ideas were protected, we wouldn't need a First Amendment. History teaches that the first target of government repression is never the last. If we do not come to the defense of the free speech rights of the most unpopular among us, even if their views are antithetical to the very freedom the First Amendment stands for, then no one's liberty will be secure. In that sense, all First Amendment rights are "indivisible." (Is it just me, or does it sound like ACLU is ok with hate speech?) Censoring so-called hate speech also runs counter to the long-term interests of the most frequent victims of hate: racial, ethnic, religious and sexual minorities. We should not give the government the power to decide which opinions are hateful, for history has taught us that government is more apt to use this power to prosecute minorities than to protect them. As one federal judge has put it, tolerating hateful speech is "the best protection we have against any Nazi-type regime in this country." (please explain this reasoning to me, because I thought it was the toleration of hateful speech that led to the Holocaust.)

  • Legally "obscene" material has historically been excluded from First Amendment protection. Unfortunately, the relatively narrow obscenity exception, described below, has been abused by government authorities and private pressure groups...the fact is, the obscenity exception to the First Amendment is highly subjective and practically invites government abuse. (instead of allowing government to ban questionable obscene material, ACLU would rather allow it all.)
The third bullet point leads to this letter written by ACLU to two judges regarding the Child Obscenity and Pornography Prevention Act of 2002:
http://www.aclu.org/privacy/speech/14793leg20020508.html

This is the conclusion of the letter:
  • Government can and should outlaw the abuse of children. However, it cannot ban speech simply because that speech may encourage unlawful acts...The right to think is the beginning of freedom, and speech must be protected from the government because speech is the beginning of thought.
Again, the spirit of ACLU is to allow anything, good or bad, until someone gets provably hurt. Isn't child pornography, real or virtual or in whatever form, just plain wrong? Is this questionable morality? One reason for their fight for freedom seem to stem from a distrust of government, which is understandable and even admirable. We need to check and hold the "powers that be" accountable. Yet, in ACLU's fight for freedom for the people, they have ironically taken away the rights and freedom of those who hold certain moral convictions. They have taken away the right and freedom to enjoy a safe, decent, righteous, virtuous, pure, and moral society. They have, in effect, become a "power that be", defining what is good and right for all people, allowing all sorts of misbehavior and immorality for the sake of certain "freedoms".

ACLU's intentions may be good, but their ideology is fatally misguided. The result of a nation that neither honors God nor cherish His commandments, which are intended for our good, is destruction. Whether it comes by slow moral decay or quick severe judgment, God's blessing and protection on this land will be removed, unless we, as a nation repent of our disobedience to His Word. Repent and turn to Christ while there is still time, while His hand of mercy is still upon you.

Perspective

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 - A post from my co-worker and sister in Christ, Freda Tao:
"Miss you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... with tears in my eyes, I have to share a sad news.. Bentley has earned his wings tonight at 7:45pm with Chris & Austin, Dan and I . .. and also grandpa & grandma (my parents).... by his side. I believed he's now having fun again in heaven...

Bentley will be forever missed... but it's a great comfort to know that he's now in a much better place with Jesus. During his 3 months & 22 days of battle, I kept thinking about why.... All I have thought about is he must have a very important job from God. I always told Chris & Austin that Bentley is Jesus' 'spykid'. He has a mission for Jesus... and I think his mission is to show daddy how much God is in control and it's good to believe & trust in God. After all these years... Dan finally accepted Jesus into his heart last night... in front of family and pastor ... & Bentley.

"Good job! Bentley!"... I'm just so proud of you...
Thank you everyone for your support & cheers...
More information about the viewing & service will be announce soon..."

http://www.icouldbeyourchild.org/liftedup.htm
(Bentley's picture is at the very bottom...)

I followed Freda and her family's struggle and hardship through her posts on Xanga since August. This is an excerpt from August 3: "Bentley is trying to calm himself down & try to deal with his weakness & fear.... But he knows Jesus loves him. Pray for Bentley... my very special boy... Just found out he had a tumor in his brain." Through this difficulty, it's natural for us to doubt that God is in control. We often ask why bad things happen to good people. But through these struggles, God willing, we see that there exists something greater, greater than we can wrap our minds around. He has granted Freda to see the situation from a greater perspective. Instead of cursing God, she blesses Him because a greater good arose from a tragic situation.

Our loving Father will have His way at the end of it all. That is why we benefit from surrendering to Him. At the end of it all, it is God who will receive all the glory, honor, and praise. It's to this end that we live and breathe. It's to this end that God inspired Paul to write in 1 Corinthians 10, "Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

Be encouraged, brothers and sisters, that we who are in Christ are merely passing through this present world, for our citizenship is in Heaven. Our trials and hardships are temporary, as is the desires of this world, so keep your minds on things above, not on things below. With the limited time that we have here, let's do all to the glory of God, blessing others and leading them to the living Christ, knowing that His name will be praised forever and ever.

My Testimony

Welcome to my blog site, "All for the Glory of Christ". This blog is dedicated to the One who saved my soul from eternal damnation and who has given me a new heart, causing me to be born again to see the glorious realities of God and of heavenly things. Jesus Christ alone is worthy to be called the King of kings and Lord of lords for He is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to God, the Father, except through Him.

I have lived a life of rebellion against God, seeking my own pleasures and selfish desires instead of His. It was at the turn of the millennium that God penetrated my heart and caused me to see the depravity and wretchedness of my soul. I stood condemned before the Holy, Righteous, and Almighty God. Guilty I stood, and I could only plead for mercy. I needed a Savior. I pleaded my case and called out into the chambers of eternity, "Son of God, Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who has come to take away the sins of the world, save my wretched soul!" And God, in his enduring mercy, accepted my plea, forgave, redeemed, and justified me by the infinitely precious blood of Jesus Christ.

12 years later, He still faithfully sustains me, purifying my soul daily, causing me to see and understand all things in the light of truth and love. Praise the Lord! My life and likewise this blog, is an expression of the deep gratitude and awe that I have of my Savior, my King, my God.

I started allforthegloryofChrist.blogspot.com February 2008. I post anything that is meaningful to me, from personal journal entries and devotionals by C.H. Spurgeon to photos and videos that speak of the glorious gospel of Christ to everything else in between.

Dream and Revelation

Recently, my uncle Ed, executive director of Asian Ministries Connection, emailed me and asked if I wanted to serve as editor of AMC's newsletter. Last year, I helped my uncle by creating a flyer for one of their annual conferences. I don't know what this job entails but pray that God will direct me. Anyway, Uncle Ed reminded me of a letter titled "Dream and Revelation" that I sent to him on December 31, 2007. I found it stashed away in one of my folders and reread it. I will post it here in hope that it may edify you, reminding you that God is still speaking and working in the lives of His children. I know that I needed that reminder, as it seems at times that God is silent regarding spiritual things. I must not lean on my own timing and understanding, but on God's alone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends and Family,
I know I haven't contacted some of you for months and even years, but I wanted to share this email that I sent out to my home church. As this is the last day of 2007, I believe that the Day of the Lord is even closer at hand, and for those who are in Christ, who have been born of the Spirit, stay strong and faithful in and to the Lord. Pray that the Spirit move mightily as He wills to bring about a regenerating work in the hearts of those who do not believe...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had a terrible dream last night. I was the target of an adversary whose life purpose was to pursue and torture me. In one episode, he was in the distance in an abandoned warehouse. He threw a knife, not at me, but at the floor or the nearby wall. I watched as the knife ricocheted off the floor, walls, ceiling, boxes, and all this time, I knew it was going to hit me. I ran anyway. There may be a chance to dodge the knife if I sharply cut to the left, then to the right. A few moments later, I was hit. This was only one form of torture. In the dream, no matter my ingenuity to escape the adversary, I failed to overcome. He always got me. I don't remember if it was in my dream, or the moments of my awakening, but I was finally aware of the hopeless situation. Suddenly I cried out to the Lord Jesus Christ for help and protection. "The Lord rebuke you Satan! By the blood of the Lamb, flee from me! You have been conquered and the Lord is victorious over you!" Could this be a glimpse of the picture John painted for us in Revelation 12?
"And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short! (Revelation 12:10-12 ESV)"
After that, there was a peace that transcended all understanding, and then I spent the entire morning seeking God and His guidance for me in this new year. I closed my eyes and prayed about so many things -- church, career, friends, marriage and singleness, issues of morality, and so on. I sought the will of God in all these things. "What does God want for me? What does God want me to do?" At one point, I shot up in bed and opened my eyes, and I heard the small still voice of God say, "You're missing the point. In all these things I will provide, but I want you to know and understand Me." It dawned on me. Could I be missing out on the most important thing in the midst of what seems like such a God-pleasing honorable prayer? What can be wrong about seeking God's will? Answer: The prayer was self-centered. It's as if God's giving me of commands to execute was more important than deep fellowship with Him. It is God who is the source of our peace, joy, and strength. One of my friends asked me this weekend, "What's the point of praying if God already knows all your thoughts and concerns?" Perhaps the prayer of all my concerns was only beneficial to me. Perhaps it will help me in the future when I see God answering those prayers. But I believe the real power of prayer is communing with Him, knowing Him, and understanding who He is. Psalm 84 is a beautiful reflection of this truth, that dwelling in the presence of the Lord is precious above all earthly things. Even if we spent our entire lives pursuing God to know Him and understand Him, we would only know <0.00000000000000001%>
And to top off these dreams and revelations, I checked my inbox today and received one new email. It's a subscription to Christ Notes - Weekly Wisdom, found here: http://www.christnotes.org/ww.php?d=2007-12-31
What precise correlation to the occurrences this morning! I'm amazed but not surprised that God ties everything together. I hope that some of you are inspired and that all of you will have the same heart and mind for God as we enter into this new year. Prepare to meet God in amazing new ways and let this testimony be a preview of things to come. May God bless and keep all of you who are in Christ.
Michael

Sing to the Lord, All the Earth!

Sing to the LORD, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be held in awe above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place.

Ascribe to the LORD, O clans of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength! Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, "The LORD reigns!" Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Say also: "Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise. Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting!" Then all the people said, "Amen!" and praised the LORD.
(1 Chronicles 16:23-36 ESV)

Today, God filled my heart with songs of praise. I thank God for bringing me back to Calvary Chapel Pacific Coast. I thank God for men like Chris and Pastor Ron for encouraging me in the faith and praying that I would one day find my home church. God is faithful! "Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!" I leave you with three songs that played in my heart all day long.

The Cross Alone

Sermonjam - Danish with English subtitles. Mikael Thomsen is a young man in Denmark who burns to preach the true Gospel. Listen as he delivers some thunder from the pulpit to a stunned congregation. Pray for him, as this is highly unusual preaching in this part of the world. His website is http://www.thecrossalone.com

Polycarp

Polycarp was born abound 70 A.D. He was sold as a slave in his childhood to a wealthy woman named Calisto. She reared him as her son. He came to know Christ as his Savior in those early years. As he grew older, he had the opportunity to study under the Apostle John and others who had personally sat under the teaching of Jesus Christ. Polycarp was actively involved in serving the Lord in the Church of Smyrna. Upon the death of Calisto, he became heir to all of her estate. He used his inheritance to advance the cause of Christ and to help those who were in need. Polycarp faithfully ministered in the church at Smyrna for many years. Persecution of Christians was the order of the day when Marcus Aurelius was the Emperor of Rome.

For many years Polycarp was spared. But, the full forced of persecution was unleashed on Polycarp in the later years of his ministry. Three days before he was arrested the Lord revealed to him in a dream that he would be burned at the stake. When the soldiers came to get him, his friends insisted on hiding him. Polycarp made it clear that in the future, he would not allow himself to be hidden. Soon the soldiers discovered where he had been taken. When he saw them coming, instead of fleeing, he calmly stated, "God's will be done." He went out and greeted them warmly and offered them food. As they were eating, he requested that he be allowed to pray before they took him away. His request was granted. For two hours he prayed fervently out loud for the Christians he knew and for the universal church.

When he was done praying they set him on a donkey and took him into the city to be tried as one who was an adversary of the authorized pagan religion. When he arrived, they sat him in a chariot and began to urge him to say that Caesar was God and offer a sacrifice to him. At first he refused to answer. Finally, after they continued to press him Polycarp said, "I shall not do what you would persuade me to." This made his judges very angry. They had confidently supposed that they would be able to easily persuade him to do what they wanted him to do. They became vicious in their words and actions. They literally threw him out of the chariot he had been sitting in, which caused serious injury to his thigh. This display of force incited the blood thirsty mob to the point that they were so loud in their curses and jeers that no one could hear. As they were dragging Polycarp to the place of execution, a voice rang out from Heaven loud and clear, above the harangue of the crowd which said, "Be strong, Polycarp, and quit thyself like a man." [The phrase "quit you" means, to carry through, or perform to the end. Hence, be strong and stand like a man to the end.]

The record states that while no one saw who it was that spoke to Polycarp, many of the believers who were in the crowd clearly heard the voice also. To be sure, Polycarp stood for the Lord Jesus Christ to the end, despite all the efforts to persuade him to renounce Christ. One of the judges tried to get him to deny his faith by saying, "Reverence thy old age…Swear by Casear's Fortune. Repent, and say; Take away the Wicked." The historian goes on to say, "Polycarp, looking with a stern countenance upon the whole multitude of wicked Gentiles, that was gathered together in the Lifts, and shaking his hand at them, looked up to Heaven, and groaning said, Take away the Wicked." But the judge was not satisfied with this. He said, "Sware, and I will set thee at liberty; reproach Christ." It is at this point that Polycarp gives his famous response -- "Eighty and six years have I now served Christ, and he has never done me the least wrong: How then can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?"

The judge then angrily urges him to, "swear by the Genius of Caesar." Polycarp refuses, but offered to share his faith in Christ. The judge rejected the offer and threatened, "I have wild beasts ready, to those I will cast thee except thou repent." Polycarp responds calmly, "Call for them then: For we Christians are fixed in our minds not to change from good to evil; But for me it will be good to be changed from Evil, to Good." The furious judge said, "Seeing that thou dispiseth the Wild Beasts, I will cause thee to be devoured by Fire, unless thou shall repent." Polycarp answered, "Thou threatenest me with Fire which burns for an hour, and so is extinguished; but knowest not the Fire of the Future Judgment, and of that Eternal Punishment, which is reserved for the Ungodly. But why tarriest thou? Bring forth what thou wilt!"

The judge loudly cried out three times, "Polycarp has confessed himself to be a Christian." The mob responded in fury, "This is the Doctor of Asia; The Father of the Christians; an the overthrower of our Gods. He that has taught so many not to sacrifice, nor pay any worship to the Gods." At first they cried out that the lions should be loosed on him and then that he should be burned alive. They took Polycarp to the stake and were going to nail him there. He spoke up and said, "Let me alone as I am: For he who has given me strength to endure the Fire, will also enable me, without your securing me by nails, to stand without moving in the pile." They merely tied him to the stake. He prayed this prayer before the fire was was kindled --

Lord God Almighty, the Father of thy Well-beloved, and Blessed Son, Jesus Christ, by whom we have received Knowledge of thee; the God of Angels and Powers, and of every Creature, and especially the whole Race of Just Men who live in thy presence! I give thee hearty thanks that thou hast vouchsafed (allowed) to bring me to this Day, and to this Hour; that I should have a part in the Number of thy Martyrs, in the Cup of thy Christ, to the Resurrection of Eternal Life, both of Soul and Body, in the Incorruption of the Holy Ghost. Among which may I be accepted this Day before thee, as a fat and acceptable Sacrifice; as thou the true God, with who is no falsehood, has both before ordained, and manifested unto me, and also hath now fulfilled it. For this, and for all things else, I praise thee, I bless thee, I glorify thee by the Eternal, and Heavenly High Priest, Jesus Christ thy Beloved Son; whit whom to Thee and the Holy Ghost, be Glory both now, and to all succeeding Ages, AMEN.

Upon the "AMEN" the executioner lighted the fire, but something strange happened. The flames arched around Polycarp like a sail of a ship filled with wind and he would not burn. After some time, the command was given to the executioner to stab him with a sword, so he did. The result was that so much blood flowed from the wound that it extinguished the fire. The fire was rekindled and Polycarps body was burned to ashes. Polycarp was faithful to the Lord unto death.

Samuel! Samuel!

Reading the Bible daily has become a rarity as of late, and I treasure the days the Spirit helps me in opening up the Word of God. Today was one of those days. I understand the importance of daily reading, for it is that daily devotion that has given me strength, wisdom, joy, and peace these last seven, but this year has become somewhat of a year of trial for me. I praise God for His amazing grace, saving me from eternal damnation and sustaining me daily with His endless mercies and boundless love.

I opened up my Essential Evangelical Parallel Bible, which is a valuable Bible to own, containing two literal translations, the New King James Version and English Standard Version, and two dynamic translations, the New Living Translation and The Message. After straightening a creased first page, I grabbed a chunk of pages and landed on 1 Samuel 3. The heading read, "The LORD Calls Samuel". I read the first verse. "Now the young man Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision." How the LORD speaks! Here I was, struggling to study the Word like I did in past years, desiring to see a vision from God, desiring to be in the Spirit, and instead, given many days of desert-like experiences. Then, the Spirit of God illuminates my heart, saying, "You are not alone, there are others that have gone before you, experiencing for many years the same desert-like experiences." Reading the rest of the chapter, I picked out the following significant ideas:
  • It is the LORD who calls us to service.
  • Listen carefully because He may be calling you. When He does, He calls you out by name, designed specifically for His purpose.
  • We may not discern the voice of God the first time, but always anticipate that He will speak again.
  • God often speaks in the quiet of the night, in times of solitude.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. Wait for the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off. (Psalm 37:7, 34)

Quotes about the Bible (Part 2)

"We are mistaken when we look at the Bible as a spiritual toolbox. We can't take things out of the Bible and make them work for us. The whole process of the spiritual life is to come before God who is alive, who becomes present to us in his Word, and who by means of that Word creates and redeems us. We don't use Scripture; God uses Scripture to work his will in us."

Howl, Fir Tree, For The Cedar Is Fallen

Zechariah 11:2

When in the forest there is heard the crash of a falling oak, it is a sign that the woodman is abroad, and every tree in the whole company may tremble lest to-morrow the sharp edge of the axe should find it out. We are all like trees marked for the axe, and the fall of one should remind us that for every one, whether great as the cedar, or humble as the fir, the appointed hour is stealing on apace. I trust we do not, by often hearing of death, become callous to it. May we never be like the birds in the steeple, which build their nests when the bells are tolling, and sleep quietly when the solemn funeral peals are startling the air. May we regard death as the most weighty of all events, and be sobered by its approach. It ill behoves us to sport while our eternal destiny hangs on a thread. The sword is out of its scabbard-let us not trifle; it is furbished, and the edge is sharp-let us not play with it. He who does not prepare for death is more than an ordinary fool, he is a madman. When the voice of God is heard among the trees of the garden, let fig tree and sycamore, and elm and cedar, alike hear the sound thereof.

Be ready, servant of Christ, for thy Master comes on a sudden, when an ungodly world least expects him. See to it that thou be faithful in his work, for the grave shall soon be digged for thee. Be ready, parents, see that your children are brought up in the fear of God, for they must soon be orphans; be ready, men of business, take care that your affairs are correct, and that you serve God with all your hearts, for the days of your terrestrial service will soon be ended, and you will be called to give account for the deeds done in the body, whether they be good or whether they be evil. May we all prepare for the tribunal of the great King with a care which shall be rewarded with the gracious commendation, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

The Joyful Father!

This is a lengthy but worthwhile sermon about grace preached by John MacArthur. May your knowledge of the grace of God deepen as you search the scriptures and discover all the riches of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Blessed

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
(Psalms 1:1-3 ESV)

A Perfect World

"Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when full understanding comes, these partial things will become useless. When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely."
-- 1 Corinthians 13:9-12

We are still like little children, knowing so little of God's work, grumbling and complaining when things don't go our way, struggling to keep up with doing what's right, trampling through mud in an imperfect world. But one day, we will understand completely, there will be no more confusion and complaints, and we will walk on streets of transparent gold in a perfect world (Rev. 21:21).

Let's Think Long-Term

Have you learned to take a long-term look at your short-term problems?

Whenever something frustrating happens, don't immediately become upset. Instead, ask yourself if this problem is really worth getting aggravated over: is this a five minute problem, a five hour problem, a five month problem, or a five year problem?

For example, if you can't find where around your house you left your car keys, don't let that steal your love, joy, peace, or patience. Being five minutes late to most things is not worth losing your joy. Similarly, if you're stuck in a traffic jam, don't let that ruin your Fruit of the Spirit. It's not worth getting upset and uptight about a ten minute delay on your way to work. Indeed, ten minutes is nothing compared to all of eternity.

Also, remember that God may be using your short-term problem for a long-term purpose. That's why James 1:2-4 says, Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. God will work through your current trials and difficulties in order to produce lasting benefits such as faith, perseverance, and spiritual maturity. That's why it's important to take a long-term look at your short-term problems.

Give Thanks!

Thankfulness depends on what is in your heart, not what is in your hand.

Most people have no trouble finding things to complain about: traffic is slow, gas is too expensive, the weather is bad, prices are too high. Yet in every single situation, that same person also has a lot to be thankful for: he can drive, has a car, has a shelter to be protected from the weather, and has the money to purchase necessary items.

Your circumstances may not be all that great, but wherever you are it is God's will that you give thanks in everything (1 Thessalonians 5:18). As a Christian, that is possible because no matter what your circumstances are, you can always thank God for deliverance through Christ (see 2 Corinthians 2:14; Romans 7:24-25).

Indeed, the Israelites knew that thanksgiving was so important that part of the official duty of the tribe of Levi was to thank God: They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord (1 Chronicles 23:30). They had heart of thankfulness and were instructed to be thankful regardless of what happened that day.

The psalmist wrote: Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name (Psalm 100:4). Notice that we can't even enter God's gates unless we're thankful.

It certainly is possible to live giving thanks to God the Father for everything (Ephesians 5:20), because thankfulness depends on what is in your heart, not what is in your hand.

Whose Side Is God On?

The Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts.
—1 Chronicles 28:9

I do not boast that God is on my side,” wrote Abraham Lincoln. “I humbly pray that I am on God’s side.”

Lincoln’s words paraphrase the thoughts Azariah expressed to King Asa of Judah. After the Spirit of God came upon Azariah, he said, “The Lord is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you” (2 Chron. 15:2).

Throughout history, people have done despicable deeds while boldly claiming that God was on their side. But being a Christian doesn’t guarantee that God is “on our side” any more than being an ancient Israelite guaranteed that God was on theirs (Isa. 3:14-15). God is on the side of those who are on His side—who know His heart and mind and do His will—not those who insist on convincing God and others that their way is right.

Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord indicated that He sides with the oppressed (Isa. 58:6-7,10). For Christians, that means it is right to be on the side of those who are being wronged.

Instead of jumping into a situation with the presumption that God is on our side, we need to be certain that we are on His.Julie Ackerman

Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go?
By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!
—Havergal

It’s dangerous to mistake our wishes for God’s will.

The Judgment Seat of Christ

Question

In 1 Corinthians 3:15, where Paul’s talking about the Judgment Seat of Christ, he tells about a Christian “whose work is burned up and he suffers loss, but he is saved, yet so as through fire.” Will you tell me a little bit about this Christian and how he fits into the lordship-salvation scheme?

Answer (by John MacArthur)

We understand that when a person is saved, there is a total transformation. How do you know that? Because salvation is described in these terms, Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ.” Right? When we baptize these people, they go under the water, what does that symbolize? What? Death. When you’re crucified, what do you do? That kills you; you die. So, whatever you were when you were saved, what? Died. Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ.” “Nevertheless,” what happened? “I live.” What do we call that? Resurrection. We were buried with Him in baptism, and we’re risen with Him to walk in newness of life. So, salvation is death of the old, resurrection of the new. And as Arney said earlier, “If any man is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

Now, what then characterizes that new creation? First of all, that new creation is characterized by a new affection. You love God; you love Christ. If any man doesn’t love Christ, he’s anathema [condemned to hell]. So, a characteristic of salvation is, you love Christ. You don’t love Him as much as you should, but you love Him, right? Secondly, you hate sin. You don’t hate it as much as you ought to hate it, but you hate it. Thirdly, you desire to obey. So, the characteristic of a new life, then, is a love of Christ and God, a hatred of sin, and a desire to obey. Now, does that mean we always love like we should, we always hate sin like we should, and we always do what we should? No.

The truth of the matter is that our lives are going to be filled with a lot of things which will bring us no reward. Some things will bring us chastening. Some things are just neutral; they’re not moral--they’re just stuff that gets burned up. It isn’t that we’re going to be judged or punished; it’s just that when it comes to reward time, that’s sorted out. So, I believe that you’re a new creation: your faith will work, your love will labor, your hope will endure, you will be different--you will have different desires, different longings, different goals, different aspirations. But, you’ll still have in your life two things: sin and waste--just useless things. And when you come to the judgment seat of Christ, does the sin have to be dealt with there? Does it? No, why? Where was the sin dealt with? On the cross. So, we’re not talking about sin; that’s already dealt with. No condemnation, no issue.

But, when you get there, you’ve got what’s left of your life; the sin--that’s dealt with. What is left then is the righteous deeds--gold, silver, precious stones--and then the “stuff.” And when it comes time to reward you, the Lord will just consume the stuff, and what remains is the gold, silver, precious stones. That’s why, in a sense, it’s not only important that you avoid sin, it’s also important that you avoid waste in your life.

Remember Hebrews 12? In Hebrews 12, the writer says, “Lay aside”--for “we are encompassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses”--you know that? “Therefore, run the race…lay aside the sin and the weight which so easily besets us”--that’s in chapter 12.

He says, “Lay aside every encumbrance and the sin.” Well, encumbrance must be something other than sin, and what he is saying is, don’t clutter your life with needless stuff. So, you know, there are people who fill up--I call it people who fill up their life with trivia. It isn’t evil; it’s just insignificant. That’s the encumbrance. It’s like the illustration I used when I taught Hebrews was: now, you can run the 100-yard-dash with an overcoat if you want, but you’re not going to be very fast. And, when it comes to reward time, you’re going to be at the rear end. Why not junk the overcoat and run?

So I think what he is saying there is that at the judgment seat of Christ, even though we are redeemed and even though we are the children of God and even though our hearts have been changed and transformed and our desires are really right and we long to honor Christ, because we are still incarcerated in the unredeemed flesh, we can fill our lives with stuff that really has no eternal consequences. And that’s going to be just literally burned away. The fire here--know this--is not a fire of judgment. It’s just burning away the dross to purify the real stuff that is to be rewarded.

Mud Pies or a Holiday at the Sea

“If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desire, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
---from The Weight of Glory, by C.S. Lewis

Roosevelt Staff

Monday, August 18, 2008 is the first day of the 2008-2009 school year at Roosevelt Elementary School. Kindergarten students will experience their first day of elementary school and all other students will return from a two month recess. Some will be excited. Others will be nervous and uneasy. Teachers will certainly be busy and stressed the first few weeks. I pray this year that God will continue to work in the lives of the staff here, giving them wisdom, patience, and love to reach and teach the students effectively. I pray that God will open spiritual eyes and hearts so that everyone will know and experience the glory and majesty of the King. May the grace and mercy of God be poured out on this campus in a way that is new and fresh and that glorifies Christ. Let's continue to pray for each other, encouraging each other in all things.
